Secure Tips

Share information securely

Good investigations often begin with information from people who know that something is wrong. I welcome tips, documents and information concerning criminal justice, policing, prisons, information rights, surveillance and public accountability.

Before you contact me

Think about how sensitive the information is, who may have access to your device or accounts, and whether somebody discovering that you contacted a journalist could put you at risk.

No method of digital communication can guarantee absolute anonymity or security.

This mailbox is provided through Proton Mail.

If you also use Proton Mail, messages sent between Proton Mail users are automatically end to end encrypted.

If you use another email provider, ordinary email should not automatically be assumed to be end to end encrypted. For sensitive information, you can encrypt your message using my public OpenPGP key before sending it.

Best for: sensitive email from another compatible email provider or PGP application

OpenPGP encrypted email

You can encrypt email for me using my public OpenPGP key. Only the public key should be downloaded from this website. My private key is never published.

Both buttons provide public encryption keys whose fingerprints are published on the PGP page. The Tips key is the public key supplied directly by Ryan for this mailbox.

Read the PGP guidance

Best for: routine or lower sensitivity contact

Ordinary email

You can email me from any normal email account. However, unless you use Proton Mail or encrypt the message yourself using OpenPGP, you should not assume that the message is end to end encrypted.

For particularly sensitive information, use Proton Mail or OpenPGP encryption.

Email service

Email protected with Proton Mail

I use Proton Mail for my journalism email because of its strong privacy and encryption features.

If you already use Proton Mail, messages sent directly to my Proton hosted addresses can be end to end encrypted automatically.

Try Proton Mail (opens in a new tab)

Referral disclosure: If you use my referral link and later take an eligible paid Proton plan, Proton may provide account credit or another referral benefit to both you and me. Proton does not sponsor or endorse my journalism.

Documents and files

Documents and files

You can send documents by email, but think carefully about the sensitivity of the material before doing so. Files can sometimes contain metadata or other information about their origin.

For particularly sensitive material or large collections of documents, you may prefer to make initial contact first so that we can discuss an appropriate way to transfer them.

Source safety

Please do not put yourself at risk

I do not ask sources to commit criminal offences, unlawfully access systems, steal information or put themselves or others at risk in order to obtain material for me.

If you already have information that you believe should be investigated, you can contact me using the options on this page.

Confidentiality

Confidential sources

I take source confidentiality seriously. If confidentiality is agreed, I will take reasonable steps to protect your identity and limit unnecessary disclosure of identifying information.

However, no journalist or communications system can honestly guarantee that anonymity or confidentiality can never be challenged by law, compromised by technology or affected by circumstances outside their control.

Professional status

Journalism, not legal advice

Contacting me through this website or email addresses is contact with me in my capacity as a journalist.

It does not create a solicitor-client, barrister-client or other lawyer-client relationship and information sent to me as a journalist is not automatically protected by legal professional privilege.

My separate legal and advocacy work is kept operationally separate from my journalism.
